Humpty Bags n' Hats

So, this post was inspired by my daughter’s BFF! She is a HUGE fan of Humpty Dumpty and so naturally when her second birthday rolled around the theme of choice was HUMPTY DUMPTY himself. Now, this particular mother goose character is not a regular at party stores. Had she asked for princesses, pirates or super heroes we would’ve been set, but then I wouldn’t be blogging about this 😉 So, what do you do when your child’s wish cannot be easily bought at a store? The answer is simple, time to get crafty!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the crafty creations of two moms on a mission – making a little girl’s Humpty Dumpty dreams come true…to the best of our abilities at least! All materials used can be found at your local craft and party stores. Feel free to use these ideas as a guide to make your own party creations 🙂

WARNING! These crafts require the use of hot glue and glue guns and therefore should be handled by an adult.

Humpty Hats

You will need:

–       Headbands (fabric covered – otherwise the hot glue will melt the plastic)

–       Doll hats (again – not plastic as they will melt when using the hot glue gun)

–       White crayon

–       Glue gun (regular or precision)

–       Glue sticks

–       Pipe cleaners

–       Pompoms

  1. Plug in your glue gun and load ‘er up with a fresh glue stick.
  2. Figure out where you want the hat to sit on the headband and use the white crayon to mark (on the hat) where the hat and the headband meet.
  3. Next, place two small dollops of hot glue on the two marked spots.
  4. Quickly adhere the hat to the headband. Make sure that hot glue makes contact.
  5. Gently hold the hat to the headband (approximately 30 seconds) before setting down to rest.
  6. Choose your pipe cleaner and wrap it around the hat. We just twisted the two ends into each other and it stayed on just fine!
  7. Make your pompom selection and hot glue them onto the pipe cleaner/hat. We chose to glue them where the pipe cleaner wrapped into itself.

Et Voila! You have a fun and…ahem…dare I say, fashion forward-looking Humpty Hat! Of course you can use this technique to make any kind of special headgear…think cowboy, princess, pirate and more. What’s especially great about this is that your kiddos won’t be fighting those tight elastic bands that usually accompany children’s party hats and at around four bucks a pop your kiddos will get to enjoy these for some time to come.

Humpty Dumpty Goody Bags

You will need:

–       Paper sacks (like the ones your mom use to send your school lunch in)

–       Construction paper

–       Clear tape

–       Googly eyes

–       Marker

–       Glue gun

–       Glue stick

  1. Plug in that glue gun and make sure it’s loaded!
  2. Cut the top of the paper bag in a semi-circle so that it looks like the top of an egg.
  3. Choose your construction paper and cut it in half. Fold it up accordion style.
  4. Pinch the center of your accordion and fluff up the sides – this is your Humpty’s bowtie.
  5. Secure the center by wrapping it with some clear tape.
  6. Use the hot glue gun to glue the googly eyes onto your bag.
  7. Draw a mouth
  8. Hot glue the bowtie beneath the mouth.
  9. Customize the rest of the bag as you see fit – we wrote the children’s names on them.
  10. Stuff’em!

And there you have it! A super easy, cute, and inexpensive (psst – it only cost us $ 3.50 for a set of six) goody bag that the kids will enjoy taking home.

So, how do you get your craft on? I hope this piece inspires you to go whip out your art supplies and create something fun with and for your little ones. Nothing like getting “arty for the party” (yes, that was a housewives of Atlanta reference thank you very much)!

Stephanie Cullum
Hey y’all! My name is Stephanie, a stay-at-home mommy, former teacher, Gemini, lover of books, quirky shoes, jeans (I own like twenty of them), coffee, travel and good food…oh and I’m also a wife and mother to my one and only daughter – she’s two and cute as a button! I’m half American and half German, born in Argentina, and grew up in Germany, Hong Kong and Singapore before moving to Dallas to go to college (go SMU). Needless to say I’m not a native to the Rio Grande Valley, but my husband is. He enticed me down here with the promise of good Mexican food, beaches, and close proximity to a foreign country – so here we are six years later and I couldn’t be happier calling the RGV home!
