Looking for cool stuff to do with the family in the Upper Valley, in the evening out of the heat?
I highly recommend that you check out the Sunset Live: Outdoor Concert Series in McAllen. The next one is Saturday, May 10th. I just can’t say enough about how much family fun we had at last month’s event. We even were a little crazy and kept our 2.5 year old out past his bedtime because we were all enjoying ourselves!
We decided to attend very last-minute. Threw together a bag with snacks and drink for the kiddo and loaded our Radio Flyer Wagon (so much more fun at this age than a stroller). We didn’t really know what to expect. But the weather was amazing and there was a little breeze, perfect for an outdoor event. The outdoor area of the McAllen Convention Center that it was held at, Oval Park (around the large water feature/lake and stage), was gated off, making it a nice, contained event. Once you enter the gates there were several food trucks! Raspas, pizza, tacos – yummo! A beer vender was there, too! There were tons of retail vendors selling local, handmade goods like soap and jewelry, and other items such as Origami Owl products. (Be sure to contact them for vendor opportunities at [email protected], we know lots of you mommies have great products to share!) If you forget cash – no worries an ATM was there. And I know the pizza guys take credit card, I am sure other vendors do, too. (Ladies – I didn’t check out the port-a-potties, but they had the nice, trailer type ones!)
We went to the lawn when there stage was to check it out. And we found some friends (which either way, I think we would have said it was a successful family outing even if we didn’t run into anyone) and parked it on their blanket (BRING A BLANKET TO SIT ON! Or folding chairs!), we ate their pizza, and all the toddlers ran around dancing and chasing each other!
Since the venue is gated and the audience was predominately families we were able to let the kid wander a tad farther than I typically do…all the kids were exploring and enjoying their freedom (and no one was yelling “NO!” at them!).
The music – WOW! I thought the event itself was great, the music was a HOME RUN!
Performers that night were: Issac & The Gentlemen, Tameca Jones, Latasha Lee, Anna Milk, DJ Crunkb0t. Different genres and sounds. A little something for everyone. Latasha Lee and The Black Ties were my most fave! They were this jazzy funk group from Austin!!!! And at the May 10th event one group on the lineup is my most favorite Texas country band, Costello!
