Grandparents, We Love You

“It’s special to see generations continue on, and enjoy their youthful vigor.  Yet, get to go home to peace and quiet when I’m tired.”  This is how my dad describes what being a grandparent means to him.

Seeing my parents faces as they met their newest grandson for the first time was so special.  The love of a grandparent is like no other.  To say my son has the best grandparents is an understatement, at least through my eyes.

PaPa had the best steak at a restaurant the day Xavier was born.  This is how my dad explains it, “It has never been as good as that day. It’s because I became a grandpa again for the sixth time.”

Grammy, my mom, stayed with us for a bit after Xavier was born.  She would wake up in the middle of the night for me, and feed Xavier so I could get rest.  She even got to witness him rolling over at one week old!  What one week old rolls over???

My parents have been the best PaPa and Grammy this little boy could ask for.  They see him at least twice a year. They made a special trip for his first birthday, and several times for Christmas.  Now, we FaceTime as much as possible when we’re apart.  Xavier can be in the other room, and if he hears my phone beeping, he knows I’m calling PaPa and Grammy.  He comes running and is immediately on the phone with them.  To see the face of my parents light up when they see him is unforgettable.

The moment my father-in-law found out I was pregnant, he was overcome with joy.  Both of them were, but Xavier would be his namesake, and no grandparent could be more excited about that!

I remember our first trip out to Los Angeles to take Xavier to meet them. My father-in-law, Abuelito, would not let him out of his sight.  It was very touching to watch.  We went to Disneyland, the Aquarium, and the L. A. Zoo.  Each time my father-in-law insisted on pushing the stroller.  He would take Xavier out of the stroller to show him the animals and the fish.  He had the best time. It was endearing to see.

Last year we came to live with them for a little while.  I know that was a special time for Abuelito and Abuelita. They don’t get to see him as much because we live so far away.  I know they enjoyed the time they had with him, and treasure each time they get to see him.  Xavier does with them as well.

This Grandparents Day, let your Grandpa and Grandma how much you love them.  We have them for such a short time.  I know you mean the world to them, so take a moment and let them know they mean the world to you.  Not just on this holiday, but everyday.

National Grandparents Day is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day. This year we celebrate on Sunday, September 11, 2016.
