Tax Free Shopping Dates – Texas

Who else has been waiting on the announcement of the tax free shopping dates?

RGVMB Tax Free Weekend Back to School-01

As you can see, they are quickly approaching and I’m getting a little excited about my kiddos getting back to a regular routine. Kinda. Sorta.

What exactly does “tax free weekend” mean?

Well, every year just before school starts our beautiful state of Texas helps families with the expenses of back to school shopping by giving us a little tax break on certain items. Backpacks, clothes and school supplies priced under $100 are exempt from sales and use taxes. On average, you will save about $8 on every $100 you spend. Gotta admit it makes your wallet happy right?

It also includes qualifying items purchased online, by telephone or mail. And you can also use them on layaway plans. Texas fine print can be found on the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts website here.

You will notice that many other stores also honor the savings by giving a discount equal to the amount of the taxes on items that are not school related. But you do still have to pay sales and use taxes on those items.

All states have a different criteria so if you’re interested in getting more information on your particular state, you can visit here for a detailed list.

Happy shopping!
