The International Museum of Art & Science is a Smithsonian Affiliate and fully accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. IMAS is the premier art and science museum of South Texas and contains over 50,000 square feet of exhibit space. The IMAS galleries host a number of revolving art and science exhibits each year. The museum provides a unique opportunity for visitors to participate in hands-on science exhibits and to learn about original works of art while encouraging creativity and innovation. The IMAS permanent collection includes more than 2,000 natural history and geology specimens and 4,500 folk art and textile objects. The 1,500 fine art works in the permanent collection reflect many countries and artistic movements beyond Mexico, dating from the 16th century to the present.
Park amenities include a 1-mile walking trail, 80 acres, 4 lit softball fields, 2 soccer fields, fishing pong and pier, 2 basketball courts, handicap-accessible playground, covered picnic shelters, park pavilion, barbecue pit, and restrooms.
Andy Bowie Park is located on the north end of South Padre Island, on the Gulf of Mexico, directly across from the South Padre Island Convention Center. Some of the amenities offered at Andy Bowie Park are two large surfside picnic pavilions, BBQ areas, RV sites, food concessions, beach rental concessions, fishing area, swimming area, restrooms and showers, a flagship hotel and access to a pristine beach. Neighborhood park offering a splash pad, playground, restrooms, and pavilion with picnic tables. It is a summer meals site via the McAllen ISD summer feeding program. The park also has a skateboard park, tree-shaded trails, baseball field, sand volleyball court, and ample green space.
A 40-acre wetlands oasis in the midst of a lively urban landscape, the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands offers watchable wildlife year-round in a setting friendly to birds, butterflies and other water-loving creatures. The grounds offer three acres of paths and butterfly gardens, a large lake for wildlife viewing, Dragonfly pond, discover pond and indoor kids’ area and gift shop. The multi-use facility includes eight fields and one championship field which meets the needs of various sports including soccer, football, rugby, and ultimate Frisbee as well as numerous community and special events including the annual McAllen Marathon. In addition to the fields, the park’s amenities include practice fields, lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, playground, water feature, concession area, and restroom facilities. A permit is required for use of this facility.
Bill Schupp Park is a great park for any age! It has an outer fitness trail, multiple playgrounds, bathrooms, picnic tables and shade trees.
La Paloma Park is located south of San Benito, Texas, in the rural community of La Paloma. The Park offers a number of recreational opportunities for the public to enjoy. Amenities include a walking trail, picnic pavilion, lighted soccer field, lighted baseball field, playground, basketball court, restrooms, concession stand and a splash pad. The Cameron County Health Department also has a satellite WIC office on location.
La Sal del Rey, or “the King’s Salt,” is one of three naturally occurring salt lakes in South Texas. Sitting atop an estimated four million tons of salt, these hypersaline lakes are seven times saltier than the ocean.
Bejarano McFarland Memorial Park is located in the colonia of Laguna Heights, within the city limits of Port Isabel. The park is approximately 2.0 acres in size and borders the Laguna Madre bay. The amenities offered at the park consist of a Bird Watch Overlook with interpretative signs that extend 110 feet into the Laguna Madre, outdoor basketball court, playground, multi-purpose trail, a large picnic pavilion with bbq pits and a butterfly garden.
