Save Me With a Seat: National Child Passenger Safety Week

Car Seat Safety

You’re on your way out the door. You’re grabbing shoes, bottles, snacks, diapers, sports bags, purses, class projects, and homework. Everyone’s in the car, engine on, front door locked… wait, did you forget to check something?

There are few things more important that having your child properly buckled up when riding in the car. McAllen ISD reminds us why it’s such a dire issue:

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, motor crashes are the leading cause of death for children 14 years of age and younger. A 2011 study by the Texas Transportation Institute in 14 Texas cities found that 10.5 % of observed children were riding unrestrained. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that roughly three out of four child safety seats are not used correctly.

Roughly 3 out of 4 child safety seats are not being used correctly?! That’s a scary percentage. Hopefully, it’s scary enough to make each of us take action.

This week, the RGV Moms Blog encourages each of you to take five minutes to check out the Save Me With a Seat website or take advantage of this free TxDOT safety program:

To schedule a free car seat check with a nearby TxDOT Traffic Safety Specialist, text the word “seat” and your ZIP code to 876526.

Call your local TxDOT office to find out more about safety seat inspection.

Renee K.
Hi. I’m Renee. Last year, I left my full-time job in New York, moved back home to Texas, bought a house, and popped out my first baby. Luckily, I did this all with my awesome husband and our totally bewildered cat. Now that we’re living in the RGV, I’m getting to know a whole new side of Texas— which I love. I also love my little girl, public libraries, fresh margaritas, adult conversation, and anything funny or satirical. (I used to love sleeping, but I think we all know that’s a lost cause.) When I’m not adjusting to life with a toddler, I'm working from home as a freelance copywriter. Oh, and downing copious amounts of iced coffee.
