Along the banks of the lower Rio Grande is the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, a 2,088-acre refuge established in 1943 for the protection of migratory birds. Considered the ‘jewel’ of the refuge system, Santa Ana NWR provides a glimpse into a world that has vanished from 95 percent of the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The 400+ species of birds found on Santa Ana make it a birder’s delight. Santa Ana offers exclusive looks into the natural world of wildlife, 12 miles of foot trails, a 7-mile tour road, and volunteer opportunities! The International Museum of Art & Science is a Smithsonian Affiliate and fully accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. IMAS is the premier art and science museum of South Texas and contains over 50,000 square feet of exhibit space. The IMAS galleries host a number of revolving art and science exhibits each year. The museum provides a unique opportunity for visitors to participate in hands-on science exhibits and to learn about original works of art while encouraging creativity and innovation. The IMAS permanent collection includes more than 2,000 natural history and geology specimens and 4,500 folk art and textile objects. The 1,500 fine art works in the permanent collection reflect many countries and artistic movements beyond Mexico, dating from the 16th century to the present.

The Magic Valley’s early 20th Century transition into an agricultural powerhouse is retold at the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse, which also embraces nature conservation as a wing of the World Birding Center. Visitors to this museum on the Rio Grande can learn about the steam-driven irrigation pumps that transformed Hidalgo County into a year-round farming phenomenon. They also can wander the museum’s grounds, where hummingbird gardens are planned, and where many of the Valley’s amazing bird species are regular visitors as well.
The Nurse Family Partnership Program at Women’s Hospital (NFP-WH) is a free, home-visiting program for first-time, low-income families, in Hidalgo and Willacy county. Our experienced, registered nurses visit with local families, from the time mom’s pregnant, until their baby is two years old. Some of our goals are to encourage quality prenatal care, support full-term pregnancies, provide health and mental health education, facilitate access to local resources, provide early intervention for cognitive and developmental delays, prevent child abuse and neglect, and ultimately strengthen the community through our families.
